Project Title: Sustainable Waste Management: Identifying and Analysing the Present and Future Waste Situation in Linga Linga
Students:  Emma Fält, Julia Gunnarsson
School: Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering
Major: Energy and Sustainable Development
Program: Minor Field Study (MFS), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida)

In 2020, students Emma Fält and Julia Gunnarsson investigated the most important factors regarding waste management development in Linga Linga, both currently and in the future. Designed originally as a field study, the project had to be conducted remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emma and Julia found waste management in Linga Linga to be nonexistent, with the most common methods for waste disposal being burning or burying it in the natural environment.  They focused primarily on how best to manage the inorganic waste that is increasing with globalization and marketing of commercial brands.

The students used previous studies done in similar rural villages to make their projections. They found that it is crucial that community members in Linga Ling focus on education, promote institutional change, and implement an improved waste management system to meet local needs if they are to improve their situation and prevent future problems .  One can see that many times, unfortunately, the consumption market increases faster than the waste management system can treat it.
