Sustainable housing

Construction of homes for single mothers

In a rural area of Beira, a number of single mothers were in need of proper housing for them and their children. UNICEF wrote in their analysis of childhood poverty in Mozambique that most children there lack access to basic infrastructure and decent housing (Childhood Poverty, UNICEF). It is difficult to serve as both sole provider and caregiver. After all, we all have the right to sleep in a safe environment. Housing projects should focus on giving impoverished people a safer and more water-resistant home.

Six homes were constructed using techniques learned in 2015 during our Pilot Housing Project.  Improvements were made  to make them even more water resistant. The houses were built from locally available adobe and recycled materials, such as glass bottles. Blueprints were provided, as well as a budget and time frame to build one house.

Following tasks for easier scalability and to be able to share our knowledge with other people wanting to improve existing houses or build new ones in the rural areas of Mozambique where development projects are often not prioritized.

This project targets the Sustainable Development Goals 11.1: By 2030, ensure access for all to adequate, safe, and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slum;and 11.c: Support least developed countries, including through financial and technical assistance, in building sustainable and resilient buildings utilizing local materials.
