building classroom & sanitation solution at the primary school of linga linga

Two classrooms of the primary school in Linga Linga village were destroyed by the powerful cyclone Dineo in 2017. These two classes then had to use  temporary buildings that were exposed to the weather. The sun created dangerously hot conditions, and when it rained, it the building leaked, especially during the rainy season. . These conditions affected children’s ability to learn. Furthermore, the school lacked enough sanitation solutions for its over 200 students. The school had only  two small outdoor sheds made of palm leaves.  Most children therefore had to go into the forest, which lacked defined areas and ways for them to wash their hands. This increased the risk of spreading diseases. The lack of proper facilities was especially problematic for girls, who, lacking privacy,  would avoid going to school during their menstrual cycle. As a result, they would miss a significant portion of the school year.  To address all of these problems, Project Vita built two classrooms using mostly locally available materials. We also built a facility that included two toilets  for the students.

This project targeted Sustainable Development Goals 4.a: Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, non-violent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all;and SDG 6.2: By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations.
